General commentary
 Sampling of a viscous liquid food product in barrels. 15 Tonnes of honey in 50 steel barrels on a road vehicle. (each barrel approx. 300kg) 
Equipment needed
 
  • Piston-tube sampler (L05-01)
  • Sampling trowel (S03-01)
  • Spiral sampler (S04-01)
  • Plastic bottles, wide opening, size 1000 ml (P03), (P06) and (P07), preferably not transparent.

All sampling tools in contact with foodstuffs must be clean and if necessary sterilized. 

Safety precautions and risk assessment
 

You should inspect the product before sampling in order to assess if there are any risk during sampling.

Under normal conditions foodstuffs do not present particular health hazards. For sanitary reasons always wash your hands before and after handling any products.

The protective/disposable gloves are to be worn.Working at heights and opening heavy metal barrels may cause the health risk.

Consignments for customs clearance – Sampling from barrels or drums: One sample is usually taken as representing the goods covered by the same customs declaration. More aggregate samples may be created from containers containing different products or lots. 

In this case as the consignment represented only one lot – the samples were taken from one barrel chosen randomly. Declarant agreed with sampling and confirmed that the sample was representative of the whole consignment. Recommended minimum quantity for each sample: 500 ml or 0,5 kg.

Samples can be taken also by Piston-tube sampler (L05-01) into rectangular plastic bottles, size 500 ml with leak-proof or air tight closure (P03), (P06) and (P07).

Always take hygienic measures to avoid contamination. Wash your hands before and after handling any products and/or use protective/disposable gloves.
