1. ‘Sharps’ containers

These are plastic or metal containers which are designed for safe storage and disposal of hypodermic needles and other sharp objects, e.g. broken glass, which you could encounter in the course of your work. Many different shapes and sizes are available, from pocket-sized to industrial-sized (e.g. for medical purposes). Obtain them locally as required. When full they must be disposed of correctly according to local procedures.

2. Ampoule breakers

These are toughened plastic pouches, in which ampoules of drug-testing reagent can be inserted and safely broken, minimizing the risk of cuts and abrasions from the glass fragments.

3. Safety knives

A number of safety knives are available which are designed to protect fingers from damage while cutting. A retractable or covered blade is naturally safer than an exposed edge. Box cutters may be obtained. These have a very short blade designed to cut only a few millimeters and are safer for opening packages.

4. Emergency and portable lighting

If it is necessary to work for a prolonged period in an area with poor lighting, make sure that suitable portable emergency lighting is made available by whoever is in charge of the premises. If there is a risk of fire or explosion, make sure that the equipment used is intrinsically safe.

5. Face masks

In addition to the standard types of face protection, disposable face masks are available for use where there is a risk of exposure to splashes or smells. They are designed to cover the mouth and nostrils in order to minimize any possible discomfort. Different types and standards of face mask offer different levels of protection. Ensure that the mask chosen offers the correct level of protection for the task. See Respiratory Protection.

6. Safety harnesses, platforms, ropes and other equipment for working at heights 

You should receive training and local safe working practices should be consulted before using equipment to access areas where you will be working at height. Pay attention to specified weight limits for ladders, ropes and harnesses. 

All equipment must be inspected regularly. Particular attention should be paid to buckles and clips to ensure they operate correctly. Check the stitching on harnesses or straps. Any items that are worn or damaged should not be used until they have been replaced. 

7. Other items

If you are working at a trader’s premises or visiting an unfamiliar location, you may be offered items of safety equipment. It is important that any equipment used: 

• meets the required standard;
• is in good condition;
• is suitable for the conditions;
• fits you correctly.

If any equipment provided does not meet these conditions you should not proceed with the sampling.

WARNING: Some equipment requires specialist fitting and training, you should not use it unless you are trained in its safe use and it has been correctly fitted for you.
