Back to Charts of cardsDefinitionGoods manufactured from metals, such as unworked castings and machined forged metals (ingots and other primary forms, sheets, rods, wires, pipes, semi-finished products, etc.).For products in individual packs see specific card for Retail packages and finished articles.For mercury, see specific card for Chemicals, liquid.For powder, granules and flakes, alkali metals and other metals of heading 2805 see specific card for Chemicals, solid.For jewellery, goldsmith’ and silversmith’ ware and other articles (HS headings 7113 until 7118), tools etc., miscellaneous articles of base metal (HS Chapters 82 and 83) and finished articles, not covered in this card, see specific card Retail packages and finished articles.Recommended minimum quantity for each final sample100 g from small items such as screws, bolts and nails or 100 cm2 from other small articles.1 piece from bigger items which can reasonably be sampled and transported to the laboratory.Applicable standards (ISO and EU Norms) and relevant legislationISO 4551: Ferroalloys - Sampling and sieve analysisYou should also refer to your national legislation and national guidelines regarding sampling.Equipment neededSuggested sampling tool depending on the method used steel shovelhacksawdrillsawclippersnipsgrinderContainers to be used for the sampling Send the sample preferably in original package to the laboratory. When not available pack the sample in a wide-mouthed plastic bottle (P04), when impossible in a strong plastic bag (P00). P04P00 Where the goods are found to be piece goods (e.g. metal castings or sheets) you should generally take a whole item without any container.Safety precautions and risk assessmentPlease refer to your national legislation and guidelines on health and safety.You should be aware of and follow any health and safety instructions in the local risk assessment and/or safe working practices for the location where the sampling is to take place.Personal protective equipmentWear personal protective equipment:Hand protection: if necessaryHead protection: if necessaryEye protection: safety goggles, if necessarySampling planType of consignmentProcedureConsignments for customs clearance The aggregate sample consists of an appropriate number of incremental samples. When you are satisfied the consignment is homogeneous, one incremental sample is usually taken as representing the goods covered by the same customs declaration.In case of large products, sampling may be very difficult or impossible. Some articles such as plates and pipes cannot be cut for sampling for practical reasons. Instead of sampling, send pictures, documentation regarding the type and composition, codes etc. and relevant information about weight and dimensions of the product to the laboratory. If possible, analyse the product on site with mobile instruments.Bulk products (loose in railway wagon, container, etc.) If there are different types of metal in each transport unit (more than one consignment), take samples from each variety.Take a sample from each type of product in case of products of different shapes and sizes.For goods which are delivered in trucks or freight wagons, if possible, take samples from 5 different positions;if sampling cannot be done as described above, sample randomly with a shovel;if possible sample the consignment during unloading on the destination of the product.Sampling of non-bulk, cast goods If possible sample the consignment by sawing, cutting, shearing, drilling or punching and cut in a place where it is best suited.Avoid warming the sample, as this may change its properties.Sampling of semi-finished products In case of rolled products, the sample should be taken over a significant part, perpendicular to the direction of rolling.Packaging or product presentation, as well as rolling direction, must be recorded:In case of sheets and discs, sample should be taken from both the center of the disc and its edges. If possible sample the whole article.In case of bars, pipes and wires, the product must be cut in the transverse direction for sampling.In case of large products like bars, pipes and wires, shape or surface must be preserved whenever it is possible.Avoid warming the sample, as this may change its properties.Handling of samplesGeneral comments Taking samples:Where there is any doubt over the uniformity of the product, for example where there are visible differences between the individual pieces, you may take more samples to ensure your sample is representative.Packing the samples:If possible, leave the article in the original package. Small articles can be packed in a plastic bag if they do not have sharp edges. If this is the case pack the sample in a plastic jar. Sharp articles should be packed with protective material.Pack strong magnets in several layers of packaging material (e.g. cardboard). If multiple magnets are to be packed together, pack them individually as described above and pack them with the repelling sides facing each other and fill the remaining space in the sample bag. This is to ensure sufficient shielding of the magnetic field. This prevents such magnets from getting stuck everywhere, which could cause damage or injury.Some metals are susceptible to corrosion or oxidation. It is important to ensure that samples are kept dry and protected from excessive heat or other conditions which may alter the sample.For more information refer to the ISO Standards and EU Regulations in force.Sampling form Fill in the sampling form. One copy should be attached to the samples and one copy should be kept for the record.If there is a unique identifier on the product (for example roll number of solder numbers, heat number), this must be recorded in the sampling form.Transport Make sure that the transport conditions guarantee the integrity and characteristics of the sample.Storage Make sure that the storage conditions guarantee the integrity and characteristics of the sample.List of HS CodesHS Number *)Description7106Silver (including silver plated with gold or platinum), unwrought or in semi-manufactured forms, or in powder form7107Base metals clad with silver, not further worked than semi-manufactured7108Gold (including gold plated with platinum), unwrought or in semi- manufactured forms, or in powder form7109Base metals or silver, clad with gold, not further worked than semi- manufactured7110Platinum, unwrought or in semi-manufactured forms, or in powder form7111Base metals, silver or gold, clad with platinum, not further worked than semi-manufacture7201Pig iron and spiegeleisen in pigs, blocks or other primary forms7202Ferro-alloys7203Ferrous products obtained by direct reduction of iron ore and other spongy ferrous products, in lumps, pellets or similar forms;
