L06-01 Pipeline sampler

Instrument Code:L06-01
Name:Pipeline sampler
Synonyms:Sampling valve for bottom-loading road vehicle fuel tanks
Description:

The pipeline sampler is described in EN ISO 3170 (chapter 5.4). Samplers are made from metal:

  1. Stainless steel is used for sampling of gasoline,
  2. Brass can be used for sampling of gas oil (diesel).

Application:
For sampling of fuels being moved. The pipeline sampler must conform to the standards for the product being sampled. The sampler valve is attached to the bottom valve on the tank. The loading/discharge pipe is then attached to the sampler valve.
Operation:

Taking of samples from bottom-loading fuel tanks:

  • Samples are taken during fuel loading or discharging at designated places only, e.g. a petrol station or refinery (risk of explosion and contamination of the environment).
  • The sampling is done using equipment for continuous automatic or manual sampling, which transfers equal increments of liquid from the pipeline to the sample container.
  • Before a sample is drawn, flush the sampling equipment, tap and tube until approximately three times their volume has been purged.

Samples are taken when approximately 20 %, 50 % and 80 % of the total volume of the tank has been discharged (EN ISO 3170 Petroleum liquids — Manual sampling). Pour the samples directly into the sampling bottles or into the mixing vessel.

Typical examples:
Sampling of fuels (diesel, gasoline, and other liquids based on mineral oils) from road vehicle bottom-loading tanks.
Cleaning and maintenance:
After sampling remove residues of fuels — wipe with a dry cloth. If necessary, clean with a brush, wash with gasoline, then with water and detergent, and dry at room temperature. Sampler must be clean and free from all substances that might contaminate the material being sampled (such as water, dirt, lint, washing compounds, naphtha and other solvents, soldering fluxes, acids, rust, and oil).
