L03-01 Pipette-type sampler

Instrument Code:L03-01
Name:Pipette-type sampler
Synonyms:Pipette, dip sampler, liquid sampler
Description:
The pipette-type sampler is a metal, glass or plastic tube. Different colours (colour coded push-bottoms) can be used to prevent mix-ups. Usually made of polypropylene (PP) or PTFE (chemically inert material). Usual capacity from 150 ml to 500 ml.

Application:
Sampling of liquids from open or closed barrels, vats, tanks and silos. Cross-sectional or spot sampling to a depth of up to 1 m. Material selection is based on the nature and temperature of the material being sampled. Teflon pipette can be used for sampling of aggressive liquids at higher temperatures (resistant up to 200 °C).
Operation:
The tube is dipped into the liquid and its upper end is closed by a finger or valve so that when the tube is retrieved, the liquid does not run out. The tube can also be filled by suction with a piston (syringe-type sampler) or sucking balloon.

Spot sampling. The vent on the top of the sampling tube is blocked. The sampler is inserted into the liquid being sampled. When the necessary depth is reached the vent is released and the sampling tube is filled with the sample at the specific depth.

Cross-sectional sampling. The tube is passed steadily through the sample at an even rate of penetration in order to level the liquids inside and outside the tube. When the pipette is full the upper vent is closed and the tube is withdrawn. The content is transferred to the sample container by opening the upper vent.
Typical examples:
 Liquid samples
Used for taking samples from all types of liquids.
Foodstuffs: spirits, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, vegetable oils.
Non-foods: water-soluble samples such as alcohol-aqueous solutions, surface-active preparations, salt solutions.
Cleaning and maintenance:
When sampling aqueous solutions (spirits, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, alcohol-aqueous solutions, surface-active preparations, salt solutions and similar liquids) disassemble and wash thoroughly with water, then rinse several times with water or organic solvents (depends on the nature of the contamination, e.g. rinse with ethanol, acetone) and dry at 60 °C.
When sampling oily solutions (e.g. oils) disassemble and wash thoroughly with hot water containing detergent, rinse with water and dry at 60 °C. Sterilisable.
